Tipping on Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Amount

Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct etiquette in the US. In practice, the difference is small. On a $100 pre-tax bill with 8% tax, the bill becomes $108. A 20% tip on $100 = $20. A 20% tip on $108 = $21.60. The difference is $1.60. Either approach is acceptable.

    Quick Tip Math

    To calculate 20% tip: move the decimal one place left (10%), then double it. On $76: 10% = $7.60. 20% = $15.20. For 15%: find 10% then add half. 10% of $76 = $7.60. Half of that = $3.80. 15% = $11.40.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

18-20% is the current standard for sit-down restaurant service in the US. 15% is acceptable for basic service. 25% or more for exceptional service. Do not tip below 15% for normal service. If there is a problem, address it with the manager rather than reducing the tip.

Is it rude not to tip in the US?

In the US, tipping is a social expectation for most service jobs. Many service workers earn below minimum wage and depend on tips for the majority of their income. Not tipping for standard service is considered rude in American dining culture, unlike in some other countries where tipping is not customary.

How do you split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the total bill first, then divide by the number of people. On a $120 bill with 20% tip: tip = $24. Total = $144. Split 4 ways = $36 each. Alternatively, each person pays their share of the food plus their share of the tip.

Should I tip on the total with tax or before tax?

Tipping on the pre-tax bill is technically correct. However, the difference is small and tipping on the post-tax total is widely acceptable and more common in practice. For a $100 meal in a state with 8% sales tax, the difference between tipping on $100 vs. $108 is about $1.60 at 20%.
