    Understanding Shoe Sizing Systems

Shoe size is a complicated topic due to the lack of a global standard. Differences in the way shoe size is measured and determined in various countries, between men's and women's feet, in the way different brands label and manufacture their shoes, and even the fact that individuals often have different sized feet, all contribute to the complication in finding a proper shoe size.

Much of the reason for a lack of a standard is due to shoe making having existed long before mass production. Shoe makers had to make shoes individually, and thus would cater to the individual, wherever they may have been. This led to the development of many different methods of measurement and fabrication, and there was not enough motivation for different countries or regions to collaborate and develop a standard. As with other cases such as units of measurement, once various methods become ingrained in a society, it is difficult to change them even if it would create a better system.

Our calculator estimates shoe size solely based on foot length. While there are many other factors that impact overall shoe fit (discussed below), our calculator provides a consistent reference through which you can identify a shoe that is most likely to be a good fit. The tables and formulas provided are our best interpretation of shoe size based on foot length, and may differ slightly from those provided by different websites, manufacturers, and brands.

    Foot Measurement Systems

Shoe size estimation is based on the measurement of foot size. A given shoe size is a function of the manufacturer, the shoe last (the physical form used to manufacture and repair shoes), a country's standards, and more. There are numerous foot measurement systems including the Brannock device, theRITZ stick, and the Mondopoint system.

    Brannock Device

The Brannock device is used to acquire three key measurements:

    • Foot length: Distance from heel to longest toe
    • Foot width: Width at the ball of the foot
    • Arch length: Distance from heel to inside ball

    US Men: (length × 3) - 22

    US Women: (length × 3) - 21

    RITZ Stick

The RITZ stick was the standard measuring device prior to the Brannock device. It is a wooden slide ruler with men's and women's shoe sizes and a conversion chart on the opposite side for converting between width and length.

Both devices are useful for quick measurements, but shoe size is only one of many factors that need to be considered for proper fit.

    Mondopoint System

The Mondopoint system is commonly used in the sports industry for athletic shoes like ski boots, skates, and ballet shoes. It's also the primary shoe sizing system in Russia, East Germany, Taiwan, China, Japan, and South Korea.

    Foot Length

Horizontal distance from heel to longest toe (mm)

    Foot Width

Distance between 1st and 5th metatarsophalangeal joints (mm)

    Perimeter

Circumference around the ball of the foot (mm)

Since it considers width and circumference, Mondopoint generally allows for better fitting than systems based primarily on foot length.

How to Find the Right Shoe

Finding the right shoe can be difficult as there are many factors that determine how well a shoe fits. Even with the same foot length, two people may find the same shoe to fit very differently.

    Factors Impacting Shoe Fit

    👣 Foot Length

Although foot length is an important estimator, two people with the same foot length may find the same shoe fits very differently. Size varies between brands and even models within the same brand.

    📏 Foot Width

Not only the width at the widest point, but width throughout the foot impacts fit. Increasingly, shoes include different width sizes, though there's no standard for width labeling.

    🦶 Foot Shape

Overall shape including circumference, arch position, and toe structure significantly impact fit. Different brands design for different foot shapes.

    ⚥ Sex Differences

Men and women have differently shaped feet. Women's feet aren't just scaled-down versions. Key differences occur around the arch, lateral side, first toe, and ball of the foot.

    🎂 Age Changes

As we age, changes in ligaments and tendons can result in feet lengthening and widening. Your size 9 from youth may become a size 10 or 11 later in life.

    🏭 Manufacturer

Different manufacturers and brands use different shoe lasts and processes. Length, width, and overall fit vary even if shoes are labeled the same size.

How to Measure Your Foot Correctly

    1

    Measure Later in the Day

Feet swell as the day progresses. Measure in the afternoon or evening for accurate sizing.

    2

    Use Proper Tools

Use a Brannock device or similar measurement tool for more accurate readings than a regular ruler.

    3

    Fit to Largest Foot

Many people have different sized feet. It's better to have a slightly loose shoe than too tight.

    4

    Consider Usage Context

For everyday wear, leave more room. For sports like climbing or soccer, tighter fit may be preferred.
