Shoe sizes vary by country and brand, making international shopping confusing. This calculator converts between US, UK, European (EU), Japanese, Chinese, and Korean shoe sizes for men, women, and children. Find your correct size in any system so you can shop confidently, whether in-store abroad or online from an international retailer. Because no global shoe size standard exists, conversion charts are approximate guides rather than exact equivalents.

Men's Shoe Size Conversion
Men's shoe sizes follow different numeric scales in each country, but they all ultimately correspond to a foot length range. European (EU) sizes are the most internationally consistent since they are based on a standard last measurement. US sizes run about 0.5-1 EU size smaller than you might expect.
| US | UK | EU | Japan (cm) | Foot Length (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 40 | 25 | 9.6 in / 24.4 cm |
| 8 | 7 | 41 | 26 | 9.9 in / 25.1 cm |
| 9 | 8 | 42 | 27 | 10.2 in / 25.9 cm |
| 10 | 9 | 43 | 28 | 10.5 in / 26.7 cm |
| 11 | 10 | 44 | 29 | 10.8 in / 27.5 cm |
| 12 | 11 | 46 | 30 | 11.2 in / 28.3 cm |
| 13 | 12 | 47 | 31 | 11.5 in / 29.1 cm |
Women's Shoe Size Conversion
Women's shoe sizes in the US are typically 1.5 to 2 sizes larger than the equivalent men's US size for the same foot length. EU sizes for women follow the same numeric scale as men (the same EU number means the same physical foot length), so a women's EU 38 and a men's EU 38 are the same size.
| US | UK | EU | Japan (cm) | Foot Length (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 3 | 35 | 22 | 8.5 in / 21.6 cm |
| 6 | 4 | 36 | 23 | 8.8 in / 22.4 cm |
| 7 | 5 | 37 | 24 | 9.1 in / 23.1 cm |
| 8 | 6 | 38 | 25 | 9.4 in / 23.9 cm |
| 9 | 7 | 39 | 26 | 9.7 in / 24.6 cm |
| 10 | 8 | 40-41 | 27 | 10.0 in / 25.4 cm |

How Shoe Sizing Systems Work
The US and UK systems are based on barleycorn units (1/3 of an inch). US men's sizes start at size 1 = 7 2/3 inches of last length, with each size adding 1/3 inch. EU sizes are based on Paris points (2/3 of a centimeter), measuring the last (the foot-form the shoe is built on) in 2/3 cm increments. Japanese sizing simply states foot length in centimeters, making it the most intuitive system for direct measurement comparison.
US Men's to EU: EU ≈ US + 33 US Women's to EU: EU ≈ US + 31 Foot length (cm) to EU: EU ≈ foot length (cm) / 0.667 Foot length (cm) to US Men's: US ≈ (foot length in inches - 7.67) × 3 + 1
These are approximations. Always verify with brand-specific size charts before purchasing.
Children's Shoe Size Conversion
Children's shoe sizing uses a separate scale from adults. US children's sizes run from toddler (size 1 = approximately 3.75 inches) through youth/big kids (up to size 7, which transitions to adult sizes). A child who outgrows a size 7Y can typically wear a US men's size 7 or women's size 8.5.
| US Kids | UK Kids | EU Kids | Foot Length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (toddler) | 0.5 | 16 | 9.5 |
| 4 (toddler) | 3.5 | 20 | 12.1 |
| 7 (little kid) | 6 | 23 | 14.3 |
| 1 (big kid) | 13 | 32 | 19.7 |
| 4 (big kid) | 3 | 36 | 22.4 |
| 7 (big kid / adult transition) | 6 | 39 | 24.8 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure my foot for shoe size?⌄
Place a piece of paper on a hard floor and stand on it with your heel against a wall. Trace the outline of your foot. Measure from the heel mark to the tip of your longest toe (this is often the second toe, not the big toe). Measure both feet as they are rarely identical. Feet swell during the day, so measure in the afternoon or evening for the most accurate fit. Find the measurement in a size chart: add about 0.5 cm to your foot length for a comfortable fit allowance.
Why do European and US shoe sizes not match?⌄
US and UK sizes are based on barleycorn units (1/3 inch increments), while EU sizes are based on Paris points (2/3 cm increments). These different base units produce the numeric offset you see in conversion charts. Because 1/3 inch does not equal 2/3 cm, the scales do not align perfectly and conversion charts contain rounding at some points. This is why converting between systems always produces approximate matches rather than exact equivalents.
Do women's shoe sizes differ from men's in the same system?⌄
In the US system, women's sizes run about 1.5 to 2 sizes larger than men's for the same foot length. A women's US 9 corresponds to approximately a men's US 7.5. In the EU system, size numbers are the same across genders: EU 38 for a woman and EU 38 for a man represent the same foot length. UK sizes also differ by gender: women's UK sizes run about 2 sizes larger than men's UK sizes for the same foot.
Why do shoe sizes vary by brand?⌄
No single global standard governs shoe sizing. Each brand designs its shoes around a "last" (the foot-shaped form) that reflects its target customer's foot shape, not just length. Lasts vary in width, arch position, toe box shape, and heel depth. A size 10 from one brand may fit identically to a 9.5 or 10.5 from another. Athletic shoes built for narrow racing feet fit differently from casual shoes designed for everyday comfort. Always check brand-specific sizing guides or try shoes on when possible, especially when ordering online from an unfamiliar brand.
What if I am between shoe sizes?⌄
If you fall between two sizes, it is generally better to size up rather than down, especially for closed-toe shoes where cramping the toes causes long-term discomfort. For athletic shoes, many runners size up by half a size to allow for foot swelling during exercise. Using insoles or thick socks can help fill the small extra space in a half-size larger shoe. If one foot is larger than the other (common), fit to the larger foot.
