Example Calculation
The percent off calculator tells you exactly how much you save and what you actually pay when something is discounted. Enter the original price and discount percentage to instantly see the sale price and total savings. Whether you are shopping online, comparing deals, or checking a receipt, this tool does the arithmetic in seconds.
Percent Off Calculation
To find the sale price: multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the savings amount, then subtract from the original price.
Savings = Original Price × (Discount % / 100) Sale Price = Original Price - Savings Or directly: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 - Discount % / 100)
Example: $80 item at 25% off. Savings = $80 × 0.25 = $20. Sale price = $60.
Stacked Discounts
When multiple discounts apply (sale + coupon), they are applied sequentially, not added together. A 20% off sale plus a 10% off coupon does not equal 30% off. First apply 20% off, then apply 10% to the already-discounted price.
Two discounts of 20% and 10%: Final Price = Original × (1 - 0.20) × (1 - 0.10) = Original × 0.80 × 0.90 = Original × 0.72 Effective discount = 28%, not 30%.
Sequential discounts always result in a smaller saving than the sum of the percentages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate what percentage off something is?⌄
Divide the savings amount by the original price, then multiply by 100. Example: item originally $50, now $35. Savings = $15. Percentage off = ($15 / $50) × 100 = 30% off.
Is 50% off really half price?⌄
Yes. 50% off means the discount equals half the original price, so you pay the other half. 50% off a $100 item means you save $50 and pay $50.
Why are stacked discounts less than the sum of individual discounts?⌄
Because the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price, not the original. Each discount is calculated on a smaller base than the previous one, so the combined effect is always less than simply adding the percentages together.
How does a percent off compare to a buy one get one (BOGO)?⌄
BOGO is effectively 50% off when you buy exactly two items of equal price. If the items have different prices, the discount equals the cheaper item's price. For buying odd quantities (1 or 3), BOGO offers less savings than 50% off. Compare the final cost per unit when evaluating these promotions.
